MCEC 2nd Quarter Report 2024

THE SECOND QUARTER REPORT FROM MAYUGE CHRISTIAN EDUCATION CENTER

P.O BOX 26745 KAMPALA

Introduction

We extend our sincere gratitude and greetings to all our partners, donors, friends and well-wishers in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We wish to inform you that the beneficiaries, staff, board of governors and all key stakeholders of Mayuge Christian Education Centre are playing their respective roles towards the smooth running of all projects at the center.

Below is the project status report for the period running from 1st April – 30th June 2024.

Background

This report highlights MCEC activities implemented within the second quarter of 2024, supporting the spiritual and educational growth of adults and children at MCEC and in the local community.

Ministry

The project is committed to ensuring that bible study sessions for both the men and women are held every Friday and Saturday, respectively. These sessions are open to all interested members of the community regardless of religion.

Education

Adult education, which started in February, is still ongoing with seven participants. Men and women learn how to write, read and do simple math. These classes are handled by our teachers every Tuesday and Thursday. In the month of May, classes were conducted Monday-Thursday because the public schools where our teachers teach had closed for holiday break.

Adult Education with Daisy

Ever since MCEC started providing teaching assistants to Baitambogwe primary school, student performance has improved. Their ability to read and write the English language has also improved. The assessment scores have shown an improvement in performance, with students getting A’s.

The head teacher is always grateful to MCEC for the support given to the school.

Vocational/Technical Skills

The long awaited motorcycle mechanics class finally started on June 19th with a total of nine students. Over 40 boys showed interest in joining the class but we could not manage them all at once. A series of interviews, both written and oral, were conducted and the nine best boys were selected.

Agriculture

The layers (chicken) project started late last year with chicken house construction, followed by the stocking of layer chicks on the 14th of December 2023. On the 22nd of April 2024, we saw the first egg in the flock. The production increased slowly but steadily. On average we get 180 eggs per day.

Godfrey Collecting Eggs

The eggs are sold locally in the community. Some of the egg sale funds are used to buy chicken feed, while the remaining balance is saved on the organisation account for future investments.

With the help of our partners and friends, we managed to get two female cows. The seller was convinced that one was pregnant and the other would soon be in heat. However it was later proved that neither was pregnant, but at least one entered heat in June and was artificially inseminated. The milk production from the cows has reduced but we are still able to get at least 7 litres of quality milk per day.

MCEC has received a good number of matooke from the banana plantation, some of which have been sold or donated, and others eaten at the centre. Some matooke suckers were donated to those interested in banana farming.

Hygiene and Health

MCEC has donated a number of reusable sanitary pads to girls in schools and women from the community to help them not miss their day-to-day activities and school time because of nature. However the need is still big.

Girls at Faith of Victory Primary School Receiving Pads

With the partnership of Waitambogwe primary, Bugodi primary, and Faith of Victory primary as our pilot schools for the WASH program, positive behavior changes have been noticed in kids at these schools after covering a few topics (hand washing, warm infection and excrement disposal).

Community Visits

We have visited a number of homes, especially those of our beneficiaries, to monitor the progress of the items they received from the centre and to offer counselling to them.

Human Resources

MCEC has been blessed with two more teaching assistants that are now assisting in primary one at Baitambogwe Primary School namely:

  • Sarah Nangobi
  • Juliet Wafula

Challenges

  1. Poverty: Most of the beneficiaries that received chicks didn’t have enough funds to buy the chicks’ feed which forced them to opt for the free range system. But, since the speed of the chicks was low compared to the local breed, most of them were eaten by prey and others stolen.
  2. Poor condition of hygiene facilities in schools: Bugodi primary school in particular has the worst latrines of all the schools that MCEC has visited. This means that however much we carry out the WASH program, students still have a high risk of contracting diseases.
  3. Dry season: Plants in our garden do not grow as expected and the harvest is greatly reduced. We paid for the irrigation water system at the district in the 1st quarter, but up to now the district has not moved.

Conclusion

We are so grateful to the Almighty for the gift of life, the support from our partners and donors, and the board that has stood with MCEC throughout the quarter. We promise to keep working even harder in the third quarter.

Yours faithfully,

Godfrey Nkutu

Director Mayuge Christian Education Centre
